Matelas Dauphin

Design sprintOrdering tool
A week of training just to order a mattress. Then, none.
Matelas Dauphin makes its own mattresses in Québec and sells them in some thirty stores. Every order is made to measure, and getting one right took experience.

Mattresses, bed bases, covers, pillows, sheets and services could be mixed in many ways, and not every mix could be built. The business rules behind them sat inside the sales process. New sellers needed a week of training to learn them. Promised dates were best guesses, because the store couldn't see what the factory could actually produce.

In June 2019, we ran a design sprint with the people who live this every day: operations, administration, and delivery and repairs. A framing day, then four days to understand, imagine, prototype and test with five sellers.

Framed the business need with a SWOT, a risk list and the sellers' journey, before the sprint started.
Mapped the journey and heard from the experts: closing the deal, entering the order, production.
Sketched, voted and decided after lightning demos, crazy 8s and a heat map vote.
Prototyped Flipper Helper in a day: an ordering tool that works like shopping online.
Tested it with five sellers on the last day: one real order, entered from start to finish.

Where Matelas Dauphin is today

Matelas Dauphin still makes its mattresses in Québec, as a manufacturer and retailer for 55 years. Its store locator lists 32 locations, including a clearance centre, and customers can also order online. Figures from matelasdauphin.com.

From a five-day sprint to software connected to the ERP
Sellers no longer need a week of training to place an order. The tool won't let anyone build a mattress the factory can't make, and everyone sees the real production and delivery dates.
